NETS PROTECTING FRUIT TREES FROM HARES, RODENTS AND DEER
Anyone who grows fruit knows how much trouble hares, rodents, deer and other animals can cause young trees. So once you have planted fruit trees, don't hesitate: the first and most basic protection is against wildlife.
According to many agricultural engineers, the most economical solution that gives good results is to fit nets that protect fruit trees from hares, rodents and deer. The moulded plastic net known as the spiral is used to protect young trees that already have branches.
It is very easy to fit, does not hinder growth, lets the trunk breathe and does not get in the way of spraying. Our nets last up to 7 years, so you can use them many times and move them to new trees.
Compared with the damage game can do and with the other investments in an orchard, fruit tree guards are a very good investment.
Damage caused by wild animals
Wild animals damage fruit trees by stripping the bark and feeding on the buds. Every damaged tree becomes very sensitive to bad weather and plant diseases.
The consequences show during the growing season. The greatest damage is done when a hare or deer injures a young tree low on the trunk. It falls behind the other trees and cannot grow and bear fruit properly. Very often it dries out completely, especially in young orchards up to five years old.
Not so rarely, wild animals are merciless and ruin entire orchards. In such cases the only option is to pull out all the trees and plant new ones.
Tree guard nets
Many inexperienced growers have faced partial or complete damage to their orchards, and we all know how unpleasant that is. So take precautions from the very start and fit tree guard nets.
There is no need to be bitter towards the animals – after all, we are coming into their territory and have to adapt to their life somehow. In adapting and protecting your trees, use only humane methods, and fitting guard nets is certainly one of them.
We do not recommend coating trunks with various preparations, as this takes more work and often does not give good results. Fencing the whole orchard is a big investment, and a hare may still dig under the fence. That is why tree guard nets are the most sensible solution.
One pack contains as many as 200 guards, and you can choose the height and colour. They are highly resistant to weather and sprays and last up to 7 years, during which you can use them many times and move them to different trees.
How to fit a fruit tree guard
As mentioned, fitting a fruit tree guard is easy – you just need to set aside the time.
The guard is easy to fit because it is slit lengthwise and simply placed around the trunk. It does not need tying, because it is already formed into a spiral, and the stiffness of the net gives all the support needed. It sits firmly around the trunk and cannot fall off. Choose the height by measuring the young tree from the ground to the first branches.
