Landfill remediation

- Landfills and water reservoirs – Today's greater awareness of environmental protection has changed the concept of the landfill. It is no longer possible to think of a landfill simply as a place to dump waste.
A modern landfill is a fully waterproof containment, ready to receive all types of inert or hazardous material, that guarantees environmental protection through: leak detection systems for the waterproofing layer, and drainage and collection of leachate (very harmful liquids formed by contact between water and waste). Once the landfill is full, it must be capped with: a waterproofing layer, a rainwater drainage system and a gas collection system – to avoid contact between rainwater and waste and the uncontrolled release of biogas into the atmosphere. These systems also reduce excess water pressure. Traditionally, natural materials have been used: clay as the waterproofing layer, gravel for drainage layers, and sand for filter and separation layers. These materials are hard to obtain and slow and complicated to place, especially on slopes. Over the last two decades geosynthetics have replaced natural materials thanks to their important advantages: they are light, quick and easy to install, very reliable and save costs. Focused on offering safer, environmentally friendly solutions that can increase landfill capacity, INTERMAS drainage geocomposites have been used for years as drainage systems for new landfills and for capping old ones.

Landfills – INTER TECH DRAIN ADVANTAGES

  • Made of non-polluting, 100% recyclable materials, so it is the better solution from an environmental point of view. Gravel is a natural, scarce and valuable material.

  • Can be installed on steep slopes. Placing gravel is limited by the material's internal angle of friction.

  • Allows greater use of the landfill's volume.

  • Puts less pressure on the waste, avoiding uneven settlement.

  • Combines four functions in a single product: filtration, separation, drainage and protection.

  • It is an industrial product, so drainage is homogeneous.

  • Reduces the geomembrane protection layer. Using gravel requires heavier geotextiles to protect the geomembrane.

  • Reduces transport costs: draining an area of 10,000 m² takes just one truck of InterDRAIN instead of more than 100 trucks of gravel.
