At first sight just a simple weed control mat, but in fact a product that can help you a great deal. Agrotextile is the best and completely ecological way to stop weeds and grass from growing, without using any herbicides or chemicals.

AGROTEXTILE – WEED CONTROL MAT

Looking after a garden takes a lot of time; weeding and hoeing are hard work. If you don't keep at it, weeds and unwanted grass appear very quickly.

There is a solution that is cheap, practical to install and gives remarkable results. The solution is agrotextile mats, which separate the garden beds from the grass and give you great control over the key environmental factors.

They are made of quality polypropylene (PP), a plastic that is highly resistant to all external influences. The dense texture lets water through and also lets the soil breathe, so it does not change its pH and turn acidic.

Using a weed control mat reduces the use of cultivating machinery and the need for manual work. With it your garden will always look tidy, and working the soil comes down to tending between the rows.

Why is agrotextile so important?

Agrotextile is also called weed control fabric. As the name says, it is a very effective tool against every grower's greatest enemy.

How does agrotextile stop weeds growing? Its dense material and dark colour stop sunlight from reaching the soil, which prevents weeds from germinating and growing. Once the agrotextile is laid you will no longer need to weed or spray herbicides, and the garden will stay tidy.

Because the mat blocks sunlight, the soil will not overheat in summer or freeze in winter. Temperature shocks can harm plant growth, and the mat helps a great deal here.

You are probably wondering how to water – does it let water through? Of course: a big advantage of the weed control mat is that it is water permeable. Water does not sit on the material, and because the fibres are evenly dense, it passes through equally everywhere.

Another important point is moisture retention. In great summer heat the mat keeps the moisture in the soil. Plants need less watering, and the top layer of soil will not dry out and crack.

Used correctly, agrotextile fabric, thanks to its high-quality material, can serve you for many years. The surface of the mat has printed lines (a grid) that make planting and cutting to size easier.

Where can a weed control mat be useful?

Thanks to all the benefits above, weed control mats are widely used: for growing fruit, vegetables, flowers, ornamental shrubs and more.

Whether you grow vegetables in greenhouses or in open gardens, agrotextile can be of great use. As more growers take up soft fruit such as raspberries, blackberries and strawberries, the use of PP mats has grown too.

Anyone with serious nursery production knows the advantages and relief agrotextile brings. It is also suitable under decorative wood mulch in gardens and parks.

One important note: there is a big difference between agrotextile mats and the ordinary sheeting we have seen some people use.

Ordinary plastic films can be counterproductive. They will stop weeds growing, but they let little water through, so water collects on the material. Over time it evaporates, and the soil does not get enough moisture.

That is not the case with agrotextile. This material has high water permeability over the whole mat and also lets air circulate.

Laying agrotextile

Agrotextile is quick and easy to lay. One person can do it, but for cutting and precise laying two people are best. It is very important that the agrotextile is not physically damaged while being laid or used, because weeds will find their way out through any tear.

In very windy areas it is advisable to secure the edges with pegs so the mat does not lift. Laid properly, it will be almost invisible while working at full efficiency. For any further questions or advice, contact us – we will be glad to help.
